Digicel tagged my private text messages with their promotions…how invasive !

Digicel_Bigger_Better_Logo_1Digicel typically has many promotions and competitions to win things running at the same time. They usually promote it through the traditional media, on their website and also by sending a text message to you making you aware of the competition, if you are a prepaid customer when you check your credit status they tag it to the text message that comes back to you with the dollar value of credit left on your phone or if you call their customer service you hear the audio promotion before you are put through to an operator. They promote their stuff 360 degrees and hey that is why they are number uno in the Jamaican market- they are ubiquitous.

But when I got a text message from a friend with a “Win 100k. Call 137 etc”…I felt like my privacy was invaded. He had not opted in to send this and I had not opted in to receive this. When I put it into my Facebook Status, I realised that a few others had similar experiences and in all we are pretty unhappy about this.

Comments gathered on Facebook and Twitter
- “I can’t stand them…they are a waste of my time and a good reason for me to change service!!
-”Are people opting into these ads? If you are not using a “free” service there shouldnt be any ads… that would annoy me”
-”I hate it.. :–( , i feel spammy”
-”The text messages are not free. They were tagging credit checks which means u type in a code and they push back the remaining minutes and dollar value back to you by text. THAT I can understand…but not on my private text message. I do not appreciate! Digicel needs to back pedal on this one. Still love em but this idea stinks.

Now while we know they are number one in the market, even as LIME and CLARO has been shooting at them with their big gun type promotions and freebies. This tactic from Digicel makes them seem..well almost desperate.
I like where I see Digicel promoting to me….everywhere else except on my private text between me and meh peeps.
